Tonight, I spent my evening speed dating in Clapham. The area is prime milk-round territory — a step into the city after university. It was in Reading, home of the Microsoft headquarters, and unsurprisingly the event was full of the IT Crowd. Just minus the laughs! I would put money on the fact that, along with the other 19 girls in attendance, that night I was the first female a number of the guys have ever spoken to other than their mothers! I literally felt like I had spent two hours reassuring complete novices that it is possible to simply talk to a girl. I can name the previous four names of all the main bars on the high street, and the doorman at the Weatherspoons is the same man who I proudly presented my ID to at the same bar on my 18th birthday after two years of sneaking past him without one! By contrast London is full of possibilities. And knowing that most of the cool, eligible men I know in London are based around Balham and Clapham, I jumped at the opportunity to speed date in the fashionable suburb. This challenge is fast making me a bit of an unwitting Dating Guru amongst my friends, and so when I posted my plans on Facebook at short notice, three single female friends quickly replied that they were keen to join the fun.

I was standing in my friend’s apartment when she looked me dead in the face and shared the strangest dating advice I’ve ever heard: only use Tinder when you’re on the toilet. It’s not a weird and slightly gross efficiency hack—this was her way of limiting the amount of time she spent perusing the catalog of humans on the app. Like so many others, she developed severe dating app fatigue and was sick of wasting hours per week on obligaswiping her way into an anxiety spiral.
In an effort to swipe less and with more intention, she put strict parameters on her app usage. Only swipe while on the potty. I didn’t know it at the time, but she’d essentially created her own form of “slow dating. Coined by the French creators of Once , a dating app that launched in France and recently made its way stateside earlier this year, slow dating is pretty much exactly what it sounds like: Instead of passively swiping through 50 “eligible” partners in one toilet session, Once employs slow dating to introduce each user to only one person, per day.
The person you see on your screen also sees you on their screen, and if you both like each other, you start a conversation and see where it leads. If not, you have to wait until the next day to meet someone new.

New intimacy: COVID-19 offers a chance to take things slow
The pair lingered over dinner and drinks for hours, took a walk in the park, and even kissed on a swing set. Nothing said: “Get ready for the slow fade. But texts during the following weeks never turned into plans, and the guy eventually stopped texting Testa, a now year-old academic counselor in Chicago, altogether. However infuriating, enduring a slow fade is a reality for many singles these days, says Megan Bruneau , RCC, a therapist in New York City who specializes in relationships and other issues facing her millennial clientele.

And the data here, too, suggest that this pandemic is actually changing the courtship process is some positive ways. Foremost, coronavirus has slowed things down. Dining tables do double duty as office desks, weekend plans are now Zoom calls with family and friends, and going out has become a stroll to the kitchen pantry. To me, this has been a time to reflect on my goals and dreams and make space for them,” Hobley told IANSlife over email. On the work front, Hobley reflects that for singles across the world, one of those resolutions in the year has been to find love and millennials in India have proved that love will never be locked down.
What used to be a casual coffee date or romantic dinner date night or long drive is now long hours of chatting, video calls, and FaceTime, leading to meaningful conversations that spark an emotional connection – all from the safety of our comfortable homes. This practice of social distancing has set in a void leading to a strong impulse and a real desire to fill it by meeting new and interesting people.
Millennials are looking forward to forming new bonds with their kind of people and online dating gives them one such exciting avenue with the safety of social distance,” Hobley shared. This urge, needless to say, has led to a massive spike in the user base for dating apps globally. On OkCupid, 91 per cent Indian users are still looking to date virtually resulting in a 26 per cent increase in conversations on the app.
According to the app”s CMO, it is going to be interesting to hear “how we met” stories of millennials who matched with their partners and built strong connections through virtual dating. I nervously signed up to my first ‘Virtual’ Speed dating event for 29th July There was no refund offered -just a message to say I was now enrolled on an event in October!! I messaged to say this was not acceptable and I simply wanted my money back. The phone no on the website doesn’t work and it’s all beginning to feel very much like a scam. Time spent in self-isolation, working from home, and avoiding places like bars and clubs means the chances of hitting it off with a potential partner are pretty slim. Of the various estimates of average reading speed bandied around over the years, one of the most commonly cited is words per minute wpm. However, a number of findings of slower reading rates challenge that statistic, notes Marc Brysbaert from Ghent University in Belgium in his new paper released as a preprint on PsyArxiv.
Brysbaert searched for all studies measuring reading rates in participants aged between 17 and 60 and in languages that use the Latin alphabet.
